How to Create a Simple Monthly Budget in Google Sheets
Start by opening Google Sheets and creating a blank document. Give your spreadsheet a clear name, such as Monthly Budget, so that it is easy to locate in your Google Drive for future updates.
Create a section for your income at the top of the sheet. List your various sources of revenue, such as your primary salary and any side hustles, in one column and the corresponding amounts in the next. Use a simple sum formula at the bottom of this section to calculate your total monthly take-home pay.
Below your income, set up a section for your monthly expenses. It is helpful to divide these into fixed costs, like rent and insurance, and variable costs, such as groceries and entertainment. List each item clearly with its estimated or actual cost in the adjacent column.
To find your remaining balance, subtract the total expenses from your total income. You can do this by creating a final cell that uses a formula to subtract the sum of your expense column from the total sum of your income column.
Throughout the month, update your variable expense cells as you spend money. This allows you to see in real-time how much of your budget remains, which helps you avoid overspending and stay within your financial limits.
At the end of the month, review your spending patterns. Adjust your budget categories for the following month based on where you spent more or less than expected to improve your financial accuracy and savings goals.
