How to Create a Personal Budget Spreadsheet in Google Sheets
Start by opening a new Google Sheet and labeling your primary columns. You will need headers for the date, description, category, and amount to track every transaction effectively throughout the month.
Next, create a separate area or a second tab for your budget categories, such as rent, groceries, and utilities. Assign a specific spending limit to each category so you have a target to aim for as you log your expenses.
Begin logging your income and expenses daily or weekly to keep the data current. Enter the date of the transaction, a brief description of the purchase, and the cost, ensuring you use a consistent number format for all entries.
Use the SUM function to calculate your total spending and total income automatically. For example, typing =SUM(D2:D100) in a cell will add up all the values in your amount column, giving you a real-time total.
Create a comparison column that subtracts your actual spending from your planned budget for each category. This calculation allows you to see exactly where you are overspending or where you have extra funds remaining.
Review your spreadsheet at the end of every month to adjust your limits for the following period. This habit ensures your budget evolves as your financial needs change and helps you reach your long-term savings goals.
