How to Create a Personal Monthly Budget in Google Sheets

Start by opening a new blank spreadsheet in Google Sheets and naming the file Monthly Budget. This provides a clean slate where you can organize your financial data without distractions.

Create your main tracking headers by labeling the first row of your sheet. Use columns for Date, Description, Category, Planned Amount, and Actual Amount to ensure you have a comprehensive view of every transaction.

List all your expected monthly expenses in the rows below your headers. Include fixed costs like rent and insurance, as well as variable costs such as groceries and entertainment, to get a realistic picture of your spending.

Set up a separate section for your monthly income. Enter your primary salary and any side hustle earnings so you know exactly how much money you have available to allocate across your expense categories.

Use simple formulas to automate your calculations. In the total cells, apply the SUM function to add up your planned and actual columns, which allows you to see your total spending at a glance.

Finish your budget by subtracting your total expenses from your total income to find your remaining balance. Update the actual amount column throughout the month to stay accountable and adjust your habits accordingly.
