How to Create an Automated Budget Tracker in Google Sheets
Start by creating a new Google Sheet and setting up two primary tabs: one for transactions and one for your monthly summary. In the transactions tab, create four columns for the date, description, category, and amount. This serves as your raw data entry point where every expense is recorded.
On the summary tab, list your spending categories in one column and your planned budget for each in the next. This provides a baseline to compare your actual spending against your goals throughout the month.
To ensure data consistency, use the Data Validation tool in the transactions tab. Create a dropdown menu for the category column that pulls from your list in the summary tab. This prevents typos from breaking your formulas and ensures every expense is categorized correctly.
Use the SUMIF formula in the summary tab to automatically calculate total spending per category. Link the formula to search the transactions tab's category column and sum the corresponding amounts for each specific label.
Add a column for the difference between your budget and actual spending. A simple subtraction formula will show you exactly how much room you have left in each category in real-time as you add new entries.
To maintain the tracker, simply enter your expenses as they occur. Because of the integrated formulas, the summary page will update instantly without requiring any further manual calculations.
