How to Create a Monthly Budget in Google Sheets

Start by opening Google Sheets and creating a new blank spreadsheet. Give your file a clear name, such as Monthly Budget 2024, to ensure it is easy to locate. Begin by setting up your main data entry columns, labeling them as Date, Description, Category, and Amount to keep your records organized.

Dedicate a specific section of your sheet to track your monthly income. List every source of revenue, including your primary salary, bonuses, and any side hustle earnings. Use a simple sum formula at the bottom of this list to calculate your total available funds for the month.

Next, create categories for your spending to identify where your money is going. Common groupings include housing, groceries, utilities, insurance, and entertainment. Organizing your expenses this way allows you to see exactly which areas of your lifestyle are consuming the most resources.

As you make purchases throughout the month, enter each transaction into your main list immediately. Be sure to assign every expense to one of your predefined categories. This habit of real-time tracking prevents you from forgetting small purchases that can add up quickly.

Use the SUMIF function to automatically total the spending for each individual category. By subtracting these category totals from your total income, you can calculate your remaining balance in real time. This automation provides a clear and instant snapshot of your financial health.

At the end of the month, review your actual spending against your initial goals. If you find that you overspent in a specific category, adjust your limits for the following month. This iterative process helps you build a more sustainable and realistic budget over time.
