How to Create an Automated Monthly Budget in Google Sheets

Start by setting up two separate tabs in your Google Sheet. One tab should serve as your transaction log where you enter every purchase, and the second should be your monthly summary page. This separation ensures that your data entry remains organized while your overview stays clean.

In your transaction log, create columns for the date, the amount, and the category. To keep categories consistent, use the data validation tool to create a dropdown menu for the category column. This prevents typos that could break your formulas later.

On your summary page, list your spending categories in one column and your budgeted amounts in the next. To automate the tracking, use the SUMIF function to pull totals from the transaction log. This formula tells the sheet to add up all amounts in the log that match a specific category.

Create a third column on the summary page to calculate the difference between your budget and actual spending. Subtract the sum of your actual expenses from your budgeted limit to see exactly how much you have left for the month.

To make the budget feel more automated, you can use conditional formatting on the difference column. Set the cells to turn red when the balance drops below zero, giving you an instant visual warning when you have overspent.

Finally, link your Google Sheet to a mobile shortcut on your phone. By entering your expenses immediately after a purchase, your summary page will update in real time, removing the need for tedious end-of-month calculations.
