How to Create an Automated Budget Tracker in Google Sheets

Setting up a budget tracker in Google Sheets allows you to monitor spending in real-time without manual calculations. Start by creating a new spreadsheet and labeling two primary tabs: one for your transactions and one for your monthly summary.

In the transactions tab, create columns for the date, description, category, and amount. This is where you will log every expense. To make it automated, use data validation to create a dropdown menu for categories, ensuring consistency in how you label your spending.

On the summary tab, list your categories in one column and your monthly budget goals in the next. This provides a clear baseline for what you intend to spend in areas like groceries, rent, and entertainment.

To automate the totals, use the SUMIF function in the summary tab. This formula looks at your transactions tab and adds up all expenses that match a specific category. For example, it will total every entry labeled as groceries and display the sum next to your goal.

Use conditional formatting to highlight cells when you exceed your budget. Set a rule that turns a cell red if the actual spending amount is greater than the budgeted amount, providing an immediate visual warning.

Once the foundation is set, you only need to enter your daily expenses in the transactions tab. The summary page will update automatically, allowing you to analyze your financial habits without performing manual math every month.
