How to Set Up a Basic Budget in Google Sheets

Start by opening a new Google Sheet and giving it a clear name like Monthly Budget. This ensures your financial data is easy to find and organized from the very beginning.

Create categories for your income and expenses in the first column. List items such as salary, freelance work, rent, utilities, and groceries to ensure every dollar is accounted for.

Add columns for Planned and Actual spending next to your categories. This structure allows you to compare your initial financial goals with your real spending patterns throughout the month.

Enter your estimated monthly income at the top of the sheet. Use a simple SUM formula to total your expected earnings, which provides a clear starting point for your spending limit.

Input your fixed expenses first, such as housing and insurance, followed by variable costs like dining out and entertainment. This distinguishes between your mandatory obligations and your flexible spending.

Use a SUM formula at the bottom of your expense columns to calculate total spending. Subtract this total from your total income to determine your remaining balance or net savings.

Update the sheet weekly by entering your actual expenses as they occur. Regular updates prevent the stress of end-of-month data entry and keep your financial status current.

Periodically review your spending trends to adjust your planned budget for the following month. This iterative process helps you identify wasteful spending and reach your long-term financial goals.
