Creating a Basic Personal Budget in Google Sheets

To start your personal budget, open Google Sheets and create a new blank spreadsheet. Give your file a clear name, such as Monthly Budget 2024, so it is easy to find in your Google Drive later.

Begin by organizing your data into columns. In the first row, create headers for Date, Description, Category, and Amount. This structure allows you to track exactly where your money goes and when it leaves your account.

Enter your total monthly income at the top of the sheet. Below that, list your fixed expenses, which are costs that stay the same each month, such as rent, insurance, or subscription services.

Use the SUM function to calculate your total spending. By typing equals SUM and selecting the range of your amount cells, Google Sheets will automatically add up your expenses for you.

Dedicate a section to variable expenses like groceries and entertainment. Update these entries regularly throughout the month to ensure your budget reflects your actual spending habits.

Finally, subtract your total expenses from your total income to determine your monthly surplus or deficit. This final number helps you decide how much you can put toward savings or debt repayment.
