How to Create a Basic Monthly Budget in Google Sheets

To start your budget, open Google Sheets and create a new blank spreadsheet. Give your file a clear name, such as Monthly Budget January, so you can easily organize your financial records by month and year.

Set up your tracking area by creating headers in the top row. Label the columns as Date, Description, Category, and Amount. This structure allows you to log every transaction in a consistent format, making it easier to review your spending habits later.

Begin by entering your total expected income for the month at the top of the sheet. List your fixed expenses next, such as rent, utilities, and insurance. Since these amounts rarely change, you can enter them at the start of the month to see how much flexible spending money you have left.

As the month progresses, record your variable expenses in the rows below your fixed costs. Every time you spend money on groceries, dining out, or entertainment, enter the date and the amount. Assigning a category to each purchase helps you see exactly where your money is going.

Use simple formulas to automate your calculations. In a cell at the bottom, use the SUM function to add up all your expenses. Subtract this total from your initial income figure to find your net remaining balance for the month.

At the end of the month, review your entries to identify trends and areas where you might be overspending. Use these insights to adjust your budget for the following month, ensuring that you are prioritizing your savings goals and necessary expenses.
