How to Create a Personal Budget Spreadsheet in Google Sheets

Start by opening Google Sheets and creating a new blank spreadsheet. Give your file a clear name, such as Monthly Budget 2024, to ensure you can easily find it in your Google Drive later.

Set up your tracking columns by typing headers into the first row. Label these columns as Date, Description, Category, and Amount. This structure allows you to record every transaction in a consistent format.

Create a separate summary table on the side or in a new tab to define your budget goals. List common categories like Rent, Groceries, Utilities, and Entertainment, then assign a specific dollar limit to each for the month.

Begin entering your daily expenses into the main tracking sheet. Be sure to use the exact category names you established in your summary table so that your formulas can accurately group the data.

Use the SUMIF function in your summary table to calculate total spending per category. This formula scans your category column and sums only the amounts that match the specific label you are tracking.

Calculate your variance by subtracting the actual spending from your budgeted goal. A positive result indicates you are under budget, while a negative number shows where you have overspent.

Enhance your spreadsheet by inserting a pie chart based on your summary data. This provides a quick visual representation of your spending habits and highlights which categories consume the most income.

Review your budget weekly to ensure all transactions are recorded and adjust your goals as needed. Regular maintenance helps you identify spending leaks and refine your financial plan over time.
