How to Create a Monthly Budget in Google Sheets

Start by opening Google Sheets and creating a new blank spreadsheet. Name the file clearly so you can find it easily later, and set up your basic column headers such as Date, Description, Category, and Amount to organize your data.

Dedicate a section of the sheet to your monthly income. List every source of money coming in, including your primary salary and any side hustles. Use the SUM function to add these figures together to determine your total available funds for the month.

Create another section for your expenses. Divide these into fixed costs, like rent and insurance, and variable costs, such as groceries and entertainment. Input your estimated spending for each category to create a baseline budget for the month.

To make the sheet dynamic, use simple formulas to calculate the difference between your income and expenses. Subtract your total spending from your total income to see if you have a surplus or a deficit at a glance.

The key to a successful budget is consistent tracking. Enter your actual spending as it happens throughout the month. You can use a separate column for actual costs to compare them against your planned estimates in real time.

At the end of the month, review where your money went. If you overspent in one area, adjust your categories for the following month. This iterative process helps you refine your spending habits and reach your financial goals more effectively.
