How to Create a Basic Monthly Budget in Google Sheets

Begin by opening a new Google Sheet and giving your file a clear name, such as Monthly Budget. Create three distinct sections on your main tab: Income, Expenses, and Summary. This structure keeps your financial data organized and easy to read at a glance.

In the Income section, create two columns labeled Source and Amount. List every source of money you receive during the month, such as your salary or freelance payments. At the bottom of the amount column, use the SUM formula to automatically calculate your total monthly take-home pay.

Move to the Expenses section and set up similar columns for Item and Cost. List your fixed expenses first, including rent, insurance, and utility bills. Then, add your variable expenses, such as groceries, entertainment, and dining out, to ensure every dollar is accounted for.

Use another SUM formula at the bottom of your expense list to find your total spending. To make the sheet more useful, you can color-code your cells to differentiate between needs and wants, which helps you identify areas where you can potentially cut back.

To find your final balance, go to the Summary section and create a formula that subtracts your total expenses from your total income. This single number tells you exactly how much you have left over for savings, investments, or emergency funds at the end of the month.

Maintain your budget by updating the figures as you spend throughout the month. By reviewing this sheet weekly, you can adjust your spending habits in real time and ensure that you stay within your financial limits.
