How to Create a Monthly Budget in Google Sheets
Start by opening a new spreadsheet in Google Sheets. Give your file a clear name like Monthly Budget 2024 so you can easily find it in your Drive. This provides a clean canvas to organize your financial data.
Create four main columns to track your money. Label them Category, Planned, Actual, and Difference. This structure allows you to compare what you intended to spend against what you actually spent.
Begin with your income at the top of the sheet. List every source of revenue, such as your primary salary and any side hustles. Sum these values to determine the total amount of money available for the month.
Move down to your expenses and divide them into fixed and variable categories. Fixed expenses include rent or insurance, while variable expenses include groceries and dining out. Enter your estimated costs in the planned column.
Use simple formulas to automate your calculations. In the difference column, subtract the actual spending from the planned amount. Use the SUM function at the bottom of your columns to see your total monthly spending at a glance.
Update your spreadsheet throughout the month as you make purchases. This habit ensures your data remains accurate and prevents surprises at the end of the billing cycle.
Review your final totals at the end of the month. Identify where you overspent and adjust your planned amounts for the following month to create a more realistic and sustainable budget.
