How to Create an Automated Monthly Budget in Google Sheets
Setting up an automated budget in Google Sheets allows you to track your spending without performing manual calculations every day. Begin by creating two separate tabs within your spreadsheet: one dedicated to your daily transactions and another for your monthly summary.
In the transaction tab, create columns for Date, Description, Category, and Amount. To ensure your data remains consistent, use the data validation tool in the Category column to create a dropdown menu. This menu should contain your primary spending categories, such as Rent, Groceries, and Entertainment.
On the summary tab, list your categories in the first column and your planned budget amounts in the second. This provides a clear target for your spending and serves as the baseline for your financial goals.
To automate the tracking process, use the SUMIF function in the summary tab. This formula tells Google Sheets to look at your transaction tab, find every entry that matches a specific category, and add those amounts together automatically.
Create a final column in your summary tab to calculate the variance between your budgeted amount and your actual spending. A simple subtraction formula will show you exactly how much you have left to spend or how much you have exceeded your limit.
Once this structure is complete, you only need to input your expenses into the transaction tab. The summary tab will update in real-time, providing an instant and accurate snapshot of your monthly financial health.
