How to Set Up a Basic Personal Budget in Google Sheets

Starting a budget in Google Sheets is an effective way to track your finances because it is free and accessible from any device. Begin by creating a new blank spreadsheet and giving it a clear name like Monthly Budget to keep your files organized.

Create three main columns labeled Description, Planned Amount, and Actual Amount. In the Description column, list your income sources at the top, followed by your fixed expenses like rent and utilities, and finally your variable spending like groceries and entertainment.

Fill in the Planned Amount column with what you expect to earn and spend based on your goals for the month. As the month progresses, record your real-time spending in the Actual Amount column. This allows you to see exactly where your money is going compared to your initial plan.

To calculate totals, use the SUM formula. Type =SUM(B2:B10) at the bottom of your columns to automatically add up your projected and actual totals. This eliminates manual calculation errors and updates instantly whenever you change a number.

Create a final column for the Difference by subtracting the Actual Amount from the Planned Amount. A positive number in the expense section indicates you stayed under budget, while a negative number shows an overspend that may require adjustments.

Set a weekly calendar reminder to update your sheet with new transactions from your bank statements. Regular maintenance prevents the budget from becoming overwhelming and helps you make informed adjustments to your spending habits in real time.
