How to Create an Automated Budget Tracker in Google Sheets

Setting up an automated budget tracker starts with organizing your data. Create two primary tabs in your Google Sheet: one for your transactions and another for your monthly summary. This separation allows you to input raw data in one place while viewing the analyzed results in another.

In the transactions tab, create columns for the date, description, category, and amount. Use a data validation dropdown menu for the category column to ensure consistency. This prevents typos from breaking your formulas and ensures every expense is categorized correctly.

On the summary tab, list your budget categories in the first column and your planned budget amounts in the second. You will then use the SUMIF function in the third column to automatically pull totals from the transaction tab based on the category name.

The SUMIF formula looks at the range of categories in your transaction sheet, matches them to the category on your summary sheet, and adds up the corresponding amounts. This means every time you add a new expense, your summary updates in real time without manual calculation.

To make the tracker more useful, add a simple bar chart or pie chart that references the summary tab. This gives you an immediate visual representation of where your money is going compared to your monthly goals.

To further automate the process, consider using a Google Form linked to your sheet. This allows you to enter expenses via your phone, which automatically populates the transaction tab without needing to open the spreadsheet manually.
