How to create a personal budget spreadsheet in Google Sheets
Start by opening Google Sheets and creating a new blank document. Give your spreadsheet a clear name, such as Monthly Budget, so you can easily locate it in your Google Drive for regular updates.
Create a set of headers in the first row to organize your data. You should include columns for the date, a brief description of the transaction, the spending category, and the total amount spent or earned.
Dedicate a specific section of your sheet to track your total monthly income. List every source of revenue and use the sum function to calculate your total available funds, which will serve as the ceiling for your spending.
Begin entering your fixed expenses first, such as rent, utilities, and insurance. Since these costs are predictable, listing them immediately gives you a clear picture of how much flexible money remains for the month.
Track your variable expenses as they occur by adding them to your list daily or weekly. By assigning each purchase to a category like groceries or entertainment, you can identify patterns in your spending habits.
Use basic formulas to automate your calculations. Subtract your total expenses from your total income in a designated cell to see your remaining balance update in real time as you add new entries.
Review your budget at the end of each month to analyze where you overspent. Use this data to adjust your financial goals and refine your categories for the following month.
