How to Create an Automated Monthly Budget in Google Sheets
Start by creating a new Google Sheet and labeling columns for date, description, category, and amount. This structure allows you to track every transaction consistently throughout the month and provides a clean dataset for your formulas to analyze.
Create a separate tab for your budget categories and their monthly limits. This serves as your reference point, where you list items like rent, groceries, and entertainment alongside the specific dollar amount you intend to spend in each area.
To automate the process, use a dropdown menu for the category column in your main transaction sheet. By using data validation to link this menu to your category tab, you ensure that every entry matches your budget categories exactly, which prevents errors in your totals.
The core of the automation is the SUMIF function. In your budget category tab, use this formula to total all spending from the transaction sheet that matches a specific category name, allowing the sheet to update automatically as you add new expenses.
Add a simple subtraction formula to see the remaining balance for each category. When your total spending is subtracted from your allocated limit, you get a real-time view of your available funds and can adjust your habits before overspending.
To keep the system running, enter your expenses as they happen or import your bank statements periodically. This keeps your financial data current without requiring manual recalculations, giving you a hands-off approach to monthly financial management.
