Getting Comfortable With Public Speaking, Fast

Public speaking anxiety mostly comes from uncertainty, not the audience itself — and rehearsal is the direct fix for uncertainty. Say your opening two sentences out loud, from memory, at least ten times before any talk that matters. A strong, confident opening buys you enough composure to recover naturally if the rest wobbles.

Cut your slide count in half, then cut it in half again. A slide with six bullet points invites you to read it to the audience, which is the single most disengaging thing a speaker can do; a slide with one image or one number forces you to actually explain it in your own words.

Practice standing still with your hands loosely at your sides before you practice gesturing — most beginners' nervous energy leaks out as distracting movement, and stillness is a skill you build before expressiveness. Record yourself once. It's uncomfortable, but it's the fastest way to notice habits — filler words, trailing off, monotone — you can't hear from the inside.
