How to set up an automated budget tracker in Google Sheets

Start by creating a new Google Sheet and setting up two primary tabs. Label the first one Transactions and the second one Dashboard. The Transactions tab will hold every individual expense, while the Dashboard will provide a high-level summary of your financial health.

In the Transactions tab, create columns for Date, Description, Category, and Amount. To ensure your data remains consistent, use the data validation tool on the Category column to create a dropdown menu. This prevents typos from breaking your formulas later on.

Move to the Dashboard tab and list your spending categories in one column and your monthly budget goals in the next. In a third column, use the SUMIF function to automatically calculate the total spending for each category by pulling data from the Transactions tab based on the category name.

To reduce manual data entry, create a Google Form linked to your spreadsheet. Add fields for the amount and category that match your sheet. This allows you to enter expenses from your mobile device and have them instantly populate the Transactions tab.

Enhance your tracker by adding a simple chart to the Dashboard. Highlight your category totals and insert a pie chart or bar graph. This visual aid makes it easier to identify which spending areas are exceeding your planned limits at a glance.

Finish your setup by establishing a weekly review routine. Check for any missing entries and adjust your budget goals based on the automated trends you see. This combination of automated tracking and manual oversight ensures your budget remains accurate and effective.
