How to Create an Automated Expense Tracker in Google Sheets

Start by opening a new Google Sheet and labeling your primary columns as Date, Description, Category, and Amount. This structure ensures that every transaction is recorded with enough detail to be useful for later analysis.

To keep your data clean, set up data validation for the Category column. Create a separate tab with your list of spending categories and use the Insert menu to add a dropdown menu to your main tracker, preventing typos that would break your formulas.

Automate your totals by creating a summary table on a second sheet. Use the SUMIF function to automatically add up all expenses that match a specific category, allowing you to see exactly how much you spend on groceries or rent in real time.

For easier data entry, link your spreadsheet to a Google Form. By creating a form with fields that match your columns, you can log expenses from your mobile device, and the data will automatically populate your sheet.

Enhance your tracker by adding a visual component. Select your summary table and insert a pie chart or bar graph, which provides an immediate visual representation of where your money is going each month.

Finally, protect your formulas by locking the summary cells to prevent accidental deletions. Regularly reviewing this dashboard will help you identify spending trends and adjust your budget accordingly.
