The Tongue and the Power of Words

Our words hold immense power. They can build up, inspire hope, and comfort those around us, just as they can tear down, stir anger, and create division. The Bible reminds us that our tongue is a double-edged sword: "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing." (James 3:9-10) This truth highlights the need for us to be intentional about what we say and how we use our words.

Take a moment and think back on your own life. Recall a time when a kind word brought someone comfort; or perhaps a harsh word caused pain or disharmony. The power of words is undeniable, but it's also something we can choose to wield wisely.

Let's consider the impact of words through the lens of Jesus’ teachings: “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:36-37) Jesus takes our speech seriously enough to call it evidence - not just the deliberate insults, but the careless, throwaway comments too. Our words should serve as a reflection of this love, encouraging and building up rather than tearing down or judging others.

God calls us to speak with grace and humility. "Be humble, then, and do not be proud," (Romans 12:3). He also reminds us that there is true power in speaking from the heart. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” (Ephesians 4:29).

Consider Proverbs 18:21 which says, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” It is with this profound power that we must approach the way we speak. What kind of words do we allow ourselves to utter? Do our words reflect God’s love and kindness, or are they more often filled with negativity and judgment?

The beauty of Christianity lies in the transformative power of speaking with God's love, forgiveness, and grace, through our words. It is a way to show compassion and understanding even when facing challenges. Our words should be a reflection of the image of Jesus that we all long to portray, an image characterized by humility, kindness, and love.

"Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." (Colossians 4:6) We are called to use our words for good, to speak encouragement and hope. As we do this consistently, our faith will become a tangible reality in the lives of others, bringing light and joy into a world filled with darkness.

Let’s make the choice to wield our tongues not as weapons but as instruments of kindness and love. Let's strive to be voices of encouragement and inspiration, spreading hope wherever we go. We can all learn this art and grow in how to use words for good; remember, you are loved by God, and your faith is a powerful force for change.
