The Armor of God Explained
The words "put on the armor" are often used in our everyday lives, but what does that actually mean? We're not talking about a fashion statement here; we're talking about protection. Protection from an enemy who seeks to destroy us with lies and darkness. The Armor of God is the gift God provides through Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 6:10-18 gives us a vivid picture of this armor. "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly realms."
This passage is often quoted, but it doesn't just tell us what to do; it reveals God's strategy for facing our battles. What does it mean to "put on" this armor?
Spiritual Weapons:
- Belt of Truth (Ephesians 6:14a): This is the ultimate foundation. It's not simply knowing the facts; it's living out God's truth through our actions and words. As we walk in this truth, we stand strong against any force that seeks to tear us down.
- The Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17): This isn’t a physical sword but a spiritual weapon – the power of the Bible. When we read it, we engage with God's words, and they become weapons in our hands to confront challenges. It is also through prayer where this weapon is sharpened. We can pray for others as well as ourselves.
- The Shield of Faith (Ephesians 6:16): Faith doesn’t just mean believing; it requires action! It's a shield against fear, doubt, and temptation. When we have faith, the Lord provides protection and guidance.
Armor that Protects Our Whole Person:
- Helmet of Salvation (Ephesians 6:17): Salvation is more than just knowing about God; it's living out our faith in Christ through daily life. This helmet helps us to see through deception, stand firm in the truth, and resist every attempt of Satan to pull us back from serving God.
- Breastplate of Righteousness (Ephesians 6:14): Our actions should reflect God’s character. We are not perfect; we will fail, stumble, and make mistakes. But righteous living is about putting on the best version of ourselves and walking in a way that honors God!
- Shoes of the Gospel of Peace (Ephesians 6:15): Peace isn't just an absence of war. It’s the inner peace we experience through knowing our relationship with Jesus Christ! When we walk with purpose, we are spreading this message to others, becoming a beacon of hope in a world that is desperately lost and needs it!
Putting on the Armor:
God gives us this armor through his Son, Jesus Christ, and calls us to wear it deliberately, piece by piece. In practice, that might look like reading a psalm before opening your phone in the morning (the belt of truth), naming a specific temptation in prayer instead of a vague one (the shield of faith), or choosing to speak a hard truth in love rather than staying silent (the breastplate of righteousness). It's not about perfection; it's about the daily discipline of suiting up before the day's battles arrive.
It is a journey, not a destination. We will get caught without our armor on more than once, but Paul wrote these instructions to soldiers already in the fight, not to the flawless. God has already provided the gift – our part is simply to put it on.
