Walking in Obedience to God

Obedience: it's a word that can conjure up images of stiffly following rules, living by strict laws, or perhaps even feeling like you are constantly battling against your own will. But when we look at the Word of God, and see what our Creator values most – love, kindness, grace, joy – obedience takes on a whole new meaning. It isn't about rigid restrictions; it's about aligning our lives with God’s purpose for us and walking in His light.

In many ways, obedience is the very essence of faith. When we surrender our will to God, when we put trust in His wisdom and guidance, we open ourselves up to a life that overflows with blessings and meaning. The Bible tells us in 1 Samuel 15:22, “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” This verse reminds us that obedience isn't a ritual we perform instead of the heart behind it — God values our willing submission over any substitute we could offer.

Think of Abraham's journey, a story that offers a powerful glimpse into true obedience. God asked Abraham to leave his homeland and travel to the land of Canaan. It wasn’t easy! There were challenges, doubts, and fear along the way. However, Abraham chose to believe in God's promises even amidst uncertainty. His willingness to obey ultimately led him to a place of incredible blessing and legacy, a testament to the power of choosing faith over doubt.

Another example is found in the story of Moses. He was called by God to lead his people out of slavery in Egypt, even though he lacked confidence and felt inadequate. He followed God's instructions, even when faced with fear, uncertainty, and opposition. It is through his willingness to step into obedience that God worked his mighty miracles and delivered his people from bondage (Exodus 3:10-12). The journey may be challenging, but the trust in God’s guidance leads to a destination far beyond what we could ever imagine.

Ultimately, walking in obedience isn't about achieving perfection; it’s about taking small steps toward a life that reflects our Lord’s love and his plan for us. When we allow ourselves to become open to His direction, even when we don’t understand why, we begin to find that God works through our weaknesses and guides us in ways we could never have imagined (Romans 8:28).

What does this look like in your life? It might be setting aside time for prayer each morning, choosing to forgive someone who has wronged you, or simply making a conscious effort to do what is right even when it’s not easy. This may involve letting go of our own agenda and trusting that God's plans have more to offer than we know.

In the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father.” We must not let the fear of failure or doubt keep us from seeking His guidance. The journey of obedience might be a long and winding road at times, but there is a deep sense of peace and fulfillment that comes with knowing we are walking in God's footsteps.
