Grace: Unmerited Favor
We often use the word "favor" to describe something we appreciate. We might say someone has our “favored” status at a party, or that we’re favored in a certain game, for example. But even with this familiar meaning, there's something deeper and richer about the concept of "grace." It truly transcends the ordinary language of our lives.
Grace is God's unmerited favor towards us. That word might sound odd at first – we can't earn it, and it's not based on anything we do to deserve it. It’s a gift from God that flows into our lives regardless of what we've done or who we are. It’s the reason why we can stand in his presence without merit or praise.
In the Bible, this truth is beautifully revealed. The book of Ephesians tells us, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this faith is not from yourselves; it is given to you by God." (Ephesians 2:8). It’s interesting to see how this phrase highlights that our salvation isn't something we earned; it was a gift. Grace wasn't something we did for ourselves – or anything in the world, for that matter.
Paul continues the thought in the very next verse: "not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:9). Even the good we do afterward is a response to grace already given, not a payment for it – like someone doing something amazing for you who never expected anything in return; it just feels right to respond in kind.
This "unmerited favor" has such a profound impact on our lives. When we truly understand the concept of grace, it transforms how we view ourselves and God. It moves us from feelings of inadequacy and shame to genuine peace and acceptance. It empowers us to see our worth through God's eyes – not based on what we’ve accomplished or who we are.
The Apostle Paul wrote, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1). It might be surprising; yet it gives us the freedom to be ourselves in his presence without fear. We can approach him with humility and trust because he's promised us that.
So, what does this all mean for our lives? Grace is an ongoing invitation into a deeper relationship with God. It’s a gift of forgiveness that sets us free from the burdens of guilt and shame. Grace reminds us that we are loved unconditionally, even in times of need or failure – because God's love is never-ending!
As you move through your day today, remember the power of grace that flows from God's heart to yours.
